As part of instruction sessions, I used to ask students to submit one thing that they learned that would benefit other students. This showed what they found most useful during instruction sessions. When we moved to giving quizzes in ANGEL, I stopped asking for research tips, but I am going to go back to doing it because it serves as a wrap up for students and shows me as an instructor what was most salient for students.
General Tips
Don’t get overwhelmed! Once you have your topic or subject, use all of the databases available, so that your information used from these sources seem well rounded and complete when you put them into a paper.

Have an open mind. Sometimes, you’ll find things that you didn’t intend to search for, but end up being a great paper topic.

EXPERIENCED LIBRARY USERS
Let me see, since I live at the library, I guess the one thing new that I haven’t known or is new is the link to all the Michigan libraries and having the book shipped within 3 days. So that was very informative. thanks it was great!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Library Vs. Google
I’m glad I learned how to access LCC’s library, there’s so much more information than google.com or search.com, and it’s actually valid information. I’m also very relieved to know how to finally get exactly what I’m looking for, by searching keywords and using quotes and asterics. Thank you!

Search Strategies
To narrow you search you could use “not” or “and.” When you use “and” you will only get articles that have both keywords/subjects. When you use “not” you will not get the articles that have that keyword in the article. To broaden your search you may use “or.” Using “or” will give you articles that will have one or both keywords/subjects.

My search strategy is to use operators. It can narrow your search which can be helpful if you know exactly what articles you are looking for and don’t want to spend forever looking for them. For example if you need to know what people have said about solving the problem of aids in Africa you would search solutions and aids and Africa.

When searching for a topic to cover all possibilities one must use a wildcard at the end of the topic. For example: baseball*
This way topics with baseball, and baseballs come up. The asterisk allows any ending to be placed on the desired topic, therefore; covering all end of your topic.

SKILLS TO TRANSFER BEYOND LIBRARY
This was a very helpful class. As a first year student I had no idea how many resources were available to me online. The tips I learned to broaden and narrow my searches will come in handy not just for school, but for all other online searching as well.

I think this information was very helpful. I had been introduced to databases some time ago but had not quite grasped the idea. This is definitely another way that I will be looking up information for school and in my personal life. Thank you very much and don’t be surprised if I am in contact with you soon! Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions during class. Sometimes I have a difficult time remembering my question if I have to wait until after class. God Bless!

General Comments ABOUT SeSSION
This was very informative, for those of us that don’t know our way around the computer very well. Lots of links and common sense things. It was a good roadmap to get me started in the right direction.

Thank you for being so flexible and approachable – every detail was what I needed, I love the library, I’m an older student returning to school after being out for over 25 years. You will be seeing me a lot here.
Thank You so much for your time and consideration
