Writing 121 - Kelly

You have five minutes to post one tip for other writing 121 students about doing library research. Explain your tip as if you were talking to another student and you would like them to be able to use this idea right away. For example, don’t just write “subject searching is helpful” but explain why it can help you find relevant articles.

i learned that you can use the word NOT to narrow a search! yay!

It is useful to use NOT when finding problems of articles bringing up subjects that you don’t need. This can reduce a ton of wasted time browsing through useless articles.

One tip i found that was helpful to me that i didn’t know about before this presentation was the wildcard trick.

one tip for online searching would be to do not get your search to narrow and keep it kinda broad.

A tip I learned was basically the whole thing. I didn’t even know that the library link offered all of these sites to help with siting and researching. It will definitely be helpful when writing future papers.

Use quotation marks to search for something with more than one word to find them together in the article.

I really liked the “not” option to narrow down a search. I never thought about the “school NOT baseball” thing. Its a helpful tool!

the little * thing makes it so you can search any word starting with the letters before the * and then fills in the last couple of words

I learned that i can mark the sites on GeneralOneFile. This will help out when siting information.
